Mission of The College Music Society

The College Music Society is dedicated to the advancement of music teaching, learning, scholarship, performance, and creative activity. Rooted in higher education, CMS serves as an inclusive forum for dialogue and collaboration among music professionals across all disciplines and career paths. We support faculty, students, independent scholars, and industry partners by fostering innovation, promoting diversity, and encouraging the exchange of ideas to shape the future of music in society. Through advocacy, professional development, and community engagement, CMS empowers its members to lead and inspire in academic, artistic, and entrepreneurial contexts.

 

Legal Structure

The College Music Society is a public educational and professional, not-for-profit organization recognized as tax-exempt by the Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(6) of the Tax Code.  The College Music Society is a corporation organized in the State of Montana.

 

Description of The College Music Society

The Bylaws of The College Music Society describe the organization as follows:

The particular business and objectives of the Society shall, as stated in its Articles of Incorporation, be educational, and shall be devoted to the general interests of music in colleges and universities.  Its primary purposes shall be (1) to gather, consider, and disseminate ideas on the philosophy and practice of music as an integral part of higher education, and (2) to increase communications among the various disciplines of the music profession.  No part of the net earnings of the Society shall inure to the benefit of any individual.  The Society shall not participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office.
