Mission
The College Music Society is dedicated to the advancement of music teaching, learning, scholarship, performance, and creative activity. Rooted in higher education, CMS serves as an inclusive forum for dialogue and collaboration among music professionals across all disciplines and career paths. We support faculty, students, independent scholars, and industry partners by fostering innovation, promoting diversity, and encouraging the exchange of ideas to shape the future of music in society. Through advocacy, professional development, and community engagement, CMS empowers its members to lead and inspire in academic, artistic, and entrepreneurial contexts.
Incorporation and Tax Status
The College Music Society is incorporated in the State of Montana. CMS is recognized under section 501(c)6 of the tax code as an educational and professional, not-for-profit, tax-exemptorganization.

The CMS Archives at the University of Maryland
Special Collections in Performing Arts (SCPA) at the University of Maryland, College Park, is a major repository for twenty-eight state, national, and international music organizations, as well as other related materials. The CMS Archives consists of approximately nine linear feet of material. The CMS collection consists of files from its two predecessor organizations, the Society for Music in Liberal Arts Colleges (SMILAC) and the College Music Association (CMA), both founded in 1947. There are files of key officers of the past including Henry Leland Clarke, Henry Woodward, Chappell White, David Russell Williams, Walter Collins, and Barbara English Maris. Most of these files contain letters and copies of letters to and from college and university music colleagues, documents and drafts of documents, programs and drafts of programs, and ephemera.
